OC Waste & Recycling (OCWR) was granted funds to implement a public outreach and marketing campaign in order to stimulate long-term behavioral change around waste reduction and landfill diversion. We were challenged with leveraging OCWR’s existing partnerships and owned channels to execute a campaign to drive measurable behavioral change in the region.
Strategic Flight Plan
In partnership with OCWR, Rocket Science developed the Eco Challenge brand; a County-wide activation grounded in creating behavioral change through dynamic partnerships and messaging to positively impact our environment. This campaign leveraged the newly developed Eco Challenge exhibits at Discovery Cube and partnerships with Angels Baseball, the Anaheim Ducks, Goodwill, local city governments and more to create a tangible call to action for taking the Eco Challenge. This effort consisted of recycling events, community activations, contests, scavenger hunts and more, which incentivized County residents to engage in desired eco-friendly behaviors.
Over the course of five years, the cumulative impact of the Eco Challenge campaign boasted:
- Over 13,420 community and recycling event participants
- 89 tons of material diverted from Orange County landfills
- Nearly 60,000 visits generated to the Eco Challenge exhibits
- 136,500,000 message impressions
- IAAPA (International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions) Brass Ring Award Finalist
Community Event Activations
The annual Eco Challenge Day collection event at Angel Stadium is a community favorite where residents can drop off their household hazardous waste, electronic waste and more. In return, families earn the opportunity to meet an Angels player, win tickets and interact with community partners in a fun and educational environment.
The County of Orange celebrates Eco Challenge Day at Discovery Cube with Earth Day festivities including e-waste collection, giveaways, an Angels player appearance, community partners and much more.
Orange County residents gather at the Honda Center to take the Eco Challenge in celebration of America Recycles Day. Participants received Ducks tickets and other prizes in exchange for recycling e-waste, and community partners hosted eco-friendly activities, giveaways and more.
